This is one of my favorite success stories. Jon Bartoshek worked for Safeway for 13 years driving a semi. A back injury prevented his continuing. He showed up in my office wanting to "go into construction management." It seemed impossible, but we looked into his background. Thirteen years earlier, Jon had owned a small tenant-finish construction company, the kind that builds out offices in leased space.
We took his construction experience and made it look "great big" on paper. We deleted the truck driving experience altogether and came up with two marketing tools (not resumes).
Then Jon said, "By the way, I'd really like to relocate to Houston." (He was in Denver at the time.) We wrote a marketing letter, designed a reply form, gathered the names of commercial construction firms in Houston, and sent off a mailing.
Jon got three positive responses, took three interviews, accepted a job offer, and relocated his family to Houston. Since then he has relocated four times, and today he is project superintendent for construction of the newest and largest hotel in Miami Beach. Who says you can't change careers?
